Starting to reestablish himself in the first team squad after a notable absence, he was moved from left back to his natural centre back position in a back three.
It was a bright start, demonstrating his athleticism and determination with a number of runs up the pitch, while he was confident with his his passing.
However it was his defensive abilities which let him down, finding himself nudged off the ball far too easily for Alvaro Morata to net Chelsea’s second goal.
There is a question mark hanging over his future at St James’ Park and performances like this will not help his case.
