Newcastle player ratings v Everton: Under fire star shines with 8/10 display
Midfielders
Jonjo Shelvey – 5: Back into the first team line up, he started off brightly but saw his impact wain in the second half. He has to be the catalyst in midfield which sees an attacking impetus, and cannot afford to go missing. Now missing for the Magpies’ next match after receiving two yellow cards in the final seconds of the game.
Mikel Merino – 7: He has had a couple of off days in recent weeks but was back to having the desired impact, helping control the tempo of the game. Still, the result did not go their way, and questions will be asked why.
Mohamed Diame 4 – Whatever he is doing in training is not translating on the football pitch, as he put in another performance lacking any impact. Ayoze Perez and Isaac Hayden must both be wondering why they are left languishing on the bench.
