Returning to the starting XI as Rafa Benitez looked to utilise two up front once again, he repaid his manager’s faith by being in the right place at the right time to open the scoring after just four minutes.
It was exactly what he needed to regain some confidence after seven games without a goal, but there is much more that needs to be done to convince the Toon Army he is deserving of a place up front.
His hold up play was severely lacking and it appeared to be Dwight Gayle who was doing much of the running, where both of the forwards should have been making a contribution.
