Naturally the most defensive minded midfielder at Benitez’s disposal, it appears as though he will remain a regular fixture as others rotate around him.
However, partnered with Mikel Merino in a two man midfield, he was overwhelmed by the three Leicester players in the centre of the park, which resulted in the Magpies struggling to establish a foothold.
More would have been expected and with Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame waiting in the wings, these sort of performances will cast doubts over his future.
