Dwight Gayle – 5: Coming on to replace fellow striker Joselu, last season’s top scorer struggled just as his fellow Magpie had up front. His most notable moment came as he was booked for what appeared to be a dive in the penalty box during what was a rare break for Newcastle.

Christian Atsu – 7: With the match at 1-0, Atsu was introduced to try and find a goal to secure a shock result. After a quiet opening minutes on the pitch, he showed off his talent to break into the box from the left flank, but his pass was poor when perhaps better placed to shoot. Was a key figure in the Magpies’ late efforts to snatch an equaliser.

Mikel Merino – 6: Given just under 15 minutes to try and make an impact in place of central defender Chancel Mbemba. However, despite a bright spell from Newcastle, was made to sit back and ensure the club did not conceded a second, but showed good composure to control the tempo.
