What a way to mark your recall to the starting XI.
His thumping strike, the first Premier League goal he has ever scored, was exactly what Newcastle needed, and his performance set the tone for the first half.
He was replaced on the hour mark with Mikel Merino taking his place, and with the Spanish youngster breathing down his neck for a place in the starting XI, it will be nip and tuck as to who starts against Crystal Palace.
Either way, Hayden can be proud of how he performed against Southampton, and has proven he can compete at the top of English football.
