Newcastle player ratings v Swansea: Attackers chalk and cheese as one man has 5/10 shocker
Goalkeeper and defenders
Karl Darlow – 8: Returning to replace last week’s debutant Freddie Woodman, Darlow had a fairly quiet first half, with Swansea struggling to find a way to test the former Nottingham Forest keeper. Did well to stop Jordan Ayew’s first header but ended up putting it right back on his head for Swansea to score first. His last minute stop showed real bravery.
DeAndre Yedlin – 7: The American was rarely tested defensively, which allowed him to show off his attacking credentials. His pace was a thorn in the Swans’ side and he showed off some impressive close control when in the attacking third. Denied Swansea off the line in the dying minutes.
Jamaal Lascelles – 7: Perhaps the most important Newcastle player on the pitch, he marshals his defence with real leadership. The Magpies look so difficult to break down with him at the heart of the back line, which helped limit Swansea’s opportunities.
Ciaran Clark – 6: The Republic of Ireland international looked to have recovered from his early season showing of poor form, returning to the commanding displays he showed last season. However was caught out for the cross which led to Swansea’s opener.
Paul Dummett – 7: How glad Newcastle will be to see the Welsh full back in the starting XI after his injury woes. As a natural left back he brings balance to the back line and even showed some attacking potency, with several dangerous crosses whipped in from his flank.
