What use is a 4-4-2 formation if your strikers are nowhere to be seen.
Dwight Gayle was meant to act as the foil to Joselu’s physicality, but there were times where he was absent from the attack when the Spaniard had the ball.
It is known Benitez’s preferred formation does not include two strikers but he has tried something new – and it has not come off.
He needs to make changes, and it could be that he axes one of the two forwards in place of a playmaker in the midfield.
