Returning to the starting line up in place of the suspended Isaac Hayden, who picked up his fifth booking of the season at Old Trafford, Benitez would have been hoping the 30-year-old could add some steel to the midfield.
Unfortunately for the Magpies, he offered very little as the game passed him by, and was awful at tracking back which allowed Watford to break through midfield with their attack time and again.
Really only included in the side due to a lack of other options, Benitez must be looking for a replacement in January as the 30-year-old does not have what it takes to compete at the top level.
