Newcastle player ratings v West Ham: Duo star with 8/10 displays in victory
Goalkeeper and defenders
Rob Elliot – 8: Firmly the number one choice for Rafael Benitez again, he found himself beaten after just six minutes, but had an impressive first half, controlling his box and dominating in the air. Saved the penalty from Ayew, which was wrongly awarded, but despite denying Andy Carroll with a great stop, was powerless to stop Ayew smashing home.
DeAndre Yedlin – 6: The American showed off his lightning pace time and time again to threaten the Hammers but was suspect defensively at times. He is probably the most solid choice at right back right now but when a natural left back becomes available, then Javi Manquillo will be back battling for his favoured role.
Jamaal Lascelles – 6: After a relatively impressive first half, had a battle on his hands when the Hammers introduced Andy Carroll. Still, controlled his defence well and is a commanding presence at the back.
Ciaran Clark – 7: Brought into the side in place of Florian Lejeune, he showed the same form which helped the Magpies to the Championship title last season. Works really well alongside Lascelles and the Republic of Ireland international is a calming presence when needed.
Javier Manquillo – 6: An impressive performance at both ends of the pitch, he monitored the threat of West Ham attack while posing a nuisance to their defenders.
