Newcastle set for Yoane Wissa boost after new AFCON reveal

Newcastle have been waiting a long time for Yoane Wissa to make his debut for the club amid ongoing injury concerns.

Newcastle chased Yoane Wissa‘s services all summer as they aimed to fill the gap left by Alexander Isak amid his revolt and refusal to feature for the club until being sold.

His eventual departure saw Newcastle sign Wissa from Brentford on deadline day as his own long saga eventually ended with a big-money move to the Tyneside club.

Wissa suffered a serious knee injury for DR Congo against Senegal on 9 September, before he had even made his Magpies bow, and he was ruled out by Eddie Howe for around six weeks as a result.

He is still yet to feature for Newcastle as they manage him so he is in top shape when the time comes to make his debut, and the chances of him going to the African Cup of Nations in December with DR Congo have now been revealed.

Wissa ‘increasingly unlikely’ to go to AFCON with DR Congo

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has urged Wissa to stay at Newcastle instead of going to AFCON in two months’ time, and he may well get his wish if a compromise can be reached.

The Daily Mail‘s Craig Hope (6 November) has now revealed it is “increasingly unlikely” that Wissa will go to the tournament with his country as he aims to recover as well as possible.

More discussions are due to take place over the coming weeks before their final squad is named, but Hope states that his sources say “a compromise will be reached” that has Wissa’s “best interests” at heart.

Wissa will not make his Newcastle debut vs Brentford

Wissa is still waiting to make his Newcastle debut, and the club will want him on the pitch as quickly as possible so they can see returns on their £55million investment, yet will also know they cannot rush him in fear of another setback.

As well as an update on his AFCON chances, Hope has also reported that he will not be featuring in his first game for the Magpies against his former club Brentford this Sunday (9 November).

The timeframe for his return has been revised, and the exact date for his return to the pitch remains unknown although the club hope he will be able to debut soon after the upcoming international break.

Eddie Howe admitted last week that the 29-year-old was “not close to training with the group,” and it looks as if fans will have to continue to wait to see their new star man in action, with the hope that he does not leave for the tournament in Morocco as soon as he is fully fit once again.
