Newcastle stadium revamp is ‘superb’ after what ‘I’ve just seen’ – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted a new design connecting all four stands at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park could make a “big difference” to the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted the current layout is an “odd shape” as half of the 52,000-seater stadium is significantly bigger.
Former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi admitted earlier this month it’s the best ground in the Premier League due to the “incredible” atmosphere generated by the Magpies fans.
It has been revealed Newcastle chiefs are currently looking to expand St James’ to a capacity of more than 60,000 instead of building a new stadium elsewhere.
Newcastle to develop St James’ Park and remain in city centre
Wyness believes the best option would be to remain in the city centre due to the benefits it can provide within the community.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’ve always enjoyed St James’ Park.
“I wouldn’t call it the greatest stadium in Britain. It’s always been a good atmosphere.
“I’ve always thought it’s a bit of an odd shape with different stands here and there, and there’s a different type of feel to it.
“There is no doubt its location in the city centre adds to it. It’s up there in terms of atmosphere, but I don’t think it’s the best.
“I think a new design of St James’ Park, with all the roof balanced together would make a big difference and make it a real cauldron. I think that could make the difference.
“That’s what they are aiming for with some of the artist impressions I’ve seen. That would be a superb addition to the Premier League if they can get that finalised.
“I am a big fan of grounds staying in the city if possible. I think football and a city becomes synonymous.
“While there is no franchise model to move people around, it’s important that connection remains within the city.

“It helps families and helps everything work very well. A strong football club is the heartbeat of any community.
“Having them available for the likes of public transport makes a big difference. It also helps the economic impact.”
