Newcastle tipped to seal ‘clever’ Bakker deal after journalist update today – pundit

Bayer Leverkusen defender Mitchel Bakker could be “a clever” signing from Newcastle United, according to Paul Robinson.

The ex-Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 21-year-old could be a solution to one of Magpies’ biggest problems.

According to the Northern Echo‘s Scott Wilson (27 January), Newcastle have lodged an offer of £14million to Bayer Leverkusen for Bakker.

The Bundesliga giants are said to have indicated that they would accept the offer if they can find a replacement before the deadline.

Bakker moved to Leverkusen from Paris Saint-Germain last summer in a permanent deal.

His contract in Germany runs until the summer of 2025.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on a potential move for Bakker, Robinson said: “That could turn out to be a clever bit of business.

“It’s an area they need to strengthen in.

“In all honesty, they could strengthen all over the pitch at Newcastle. Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier are decent signings but it’s not enough. With the money and the finances they have got they should be bettering their squad in numerous positions.

“They are in the bottom three for a reason and one of those reasons is the standard of their defending. It’s been a big problem.

“Left-back is an area they need to strengthen in. Bakker could be one of a number of solutions they look to before the window shuts.”
