Newcastle tipped to sign the next Mason Mount after big update - pundit

Newcastle United should make a top-quality number 10 their transfer priority this summer if a Saudi-backed takeover is completed.

That is the view of Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about where the Newcastle squad can be improved if they decide to spend big in the upcoming transfer window.

This site revealed last week the club are privately confident they will get the green light to complete the Saudi-backed takeover after Mike Ashley launched legal action against the Premier League.

Both sides are still committed to the deal and it could be completed as early as July or possibly June.

Asked what areas Steve Bruce should improve if he is given the financial backing this summer, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “There are a few places.

“Maybe in midfield and at the back they can improve in and become a lot better team.

“You look at the squad, they’ve got Lascelles, Wilson and the Longstaff brothers. The spine of the team is very good.

“They just need a few more different players in the defence and attack.

“They need to help Saint-Maximin, he gets a lot of injuries so you need better back up players as well. I think Newcastle can really keep improving.

“What they really need as well though is a number 10. A Jack Grealish, a James Maddison, a Mason Mount. One of these sorts of players. They need one of them.

“Willock’s OK but I don’t think he’s going to be the answer.

“They need somebody who can get on the ball and make things happen. With Saint-Maximin on the left, Almiron or someone else on the right and Wilson up front they can be a real threat, Newcastle.

“I just hope Steve Bruce is given the time to do it.”
