Newcastle told to complete ‘£60m’ deal after Bruno Guimaraes source’s reveal

Noel Whelan has urged Newcastle United to reward Bruno Guimaraes with a new contract at St James’ Park after a superb start to his career in Tyneside.

The former Premier League forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes it’s a “no-brainer” for Newcastle to hand Guimaraes a new long-term contract at the club.

Sources told Football Insider (24 December) that Newcastle are closing in on a £60million deal with the Brazilian midfielder.

It’d make Guimaraes Newcastle’s highest-ever paid player, with the deal expected to earn the 25-year-old a hefty £200,000-a-week.

Guimaraes joined the Magpies from Lyon for £40million in 2022 and has made a superb start to his career under Eddie Howe.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a no-brainer to give him a new contract and a long-term contract at that – he’s been a standout.

He’s already a fan’s favourite.

I love the way he plays. I love his aggression.

He looks very calm and composed on the ball and he’s one of those, you know, big personalities in that midfield area and you can’t allow to let those sort of players go.

He’s settled in at a new club in one of the hardest leagues in the world and at times he makes it look very, very easy, and he looks like he’s really enjoying his time at Newcastle.

And why wouldn’t you with the run that they’ve been on and where they are sitting in the Premier League right now?

There’s plenty to like about what Newcastle are trying to build in terms of their stature as a football club, but also what they’re going to bring on the field as well.

I mean, it’s a good time to be a Newcastle fan, and it’s got to be a good time to be a Newcastle player, winning six games on the bounce and sitting up there in the Champions League spots.

You’ve got to reward these players and big personalities that bring quality to that team.”
