Newcastle United fans have urged the club to sign free agent Joel Matip to provide defensive cover for the current season.
The Magpies has targeted Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi throughout the summer transfer window but were unable to secure him despite weeks of negotiations.
Eddie Howe had made the England international his number-one target, but the centre-back remained at Palace after the transfer deadline.
With the Magpies now facing competition to land Guehi in future windows, the club might look for alternative options.
Although the transfer window might be closed, free agents such as Matip are available to sign if needed.

Matip departed Liverpool in the summer when his contract ended, and he has yet to sign a deal with another club.
The 33-year-old boasts plenty of Premier League experience after playing 150 games in the English top flight.
Matip is also versatile enough to play in midfield if needed, and Newcastle fans believe he could solve one of their current problems.
