Newcastle told to sign ‘exciting’ Callum Wilson ally after budget-breaking update – pundit
Noel Whelan has urged Newcastle to bring in an “exciting” new striker this summer to lighten the load on Callum Wilson.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed it is now up to Eddie Howe to identify the “right player” to partner the 28-year-old.
According to The Athletic (31 March), signing a new forward is of “utmost priority” for Newcastle – with the majority of their summer budget likely to be used to seal a marquee addition.

The report claims Darwin Nunez, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Patrik Schick are among the names regularly mentioned behind the scenes.
Whelan raised fears over the injury record of Magpies talisman Wilson.
When asked if Newcastle need to bring in two new strikers amid worries over the England international’s fitness, he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “It just depends.
“They’ve got Chris Wood and Callum Wilson right now. If you can keep Wilson fit, you will probably only need one.
“You have two different kinds of strikers there. There are options for Eddie Howe, with Wilson the clear first choice.
“Three strikers is enough to get you through a season, now it’s just up to Eddie Howe to go out and get the right player. Someone who can do everything that Wood and Wilson can in one.
“Bringing in the extra striker in would really excite the fans as well as ease the load on those two. That’s the way to go, for me.”

Wood signed for Newcastle in January for a reported £25million but has scored just once.
Wilson has been sidelined through injury since December 2021 but could make a return before the end of the season.
