Newcastle United about to pay £45m for ‘£30m player’ after transfer update – pundit

Newcastle United will not be held to ransom by selling clubs during the summer transfer window.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ transfer struggles.

On 27 May, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards claimed prices have been “severely inflated” on players Newcastle enquired about since the season finished.

The Toon have been trying to bring in fresh faces before the window opens but the club have encountered the same problem they did in January.

As quoted by The Northern Echo (22 January) Eddie Howe revealed his side were facing “inflated transfer fees” during the winter window.

McAvennie insists this is something Newcastle will have to deal with this for the next few transfer windows.

“That’s just how things are at the moment,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“A £30million player is all of a sudden a £40million or £45million player if you are Newcastle.

“Clubs know Newcastle have this money and there isn’t a lot they can do about that. They can’t say ‘we don’t have the money’ because they do.

“This happened to Chelsea all those years ago, it happened to Man City and now it is happening to Newcastle.

“There isn’t a lot Newcastle can do unless they want to wait until the end of the window and play a game of bluff with these clubs.

“They will get who they want eventually but I think they will struggle to get deals done quickly.

“They will also have to pay that £45million fee for the £30million player.”

Newcastle spent £92million in January.

Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Dan Burn all joined.

In other news, one pundit claims the Magpies are about to seal a ‘big deal’ after a crucial Dan Ashworth update.
