Newcastle United are signing Matt Targett for ‘dirt cheap’ after Sky update – pundit

Matt Targett deserves his permanent move to Newcastle United after helping the club stay in the Premier League during the 2021-22 season.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider with the defender reportedly set for a medical at Newcastle on Wednesday (8 June).

On Wednesday (8 June), The Athletic reported Newcastle will pay £12million for Targett, 26, after already paying £3million of his potential £15million cost in loan fees.

After the left-back joined the Magpies in January 2021, he played every single minute until the end of the season apart from the game against his parent club on 13 February.

McAvennie insists Newcastle are getting a bargain.

“£12million, not bad,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He came in and he showed what he was about. He did what Newcastle weren’t doing last season.

“Targett came in and showed up all the players who weren’t performing under Bruce. Trippier did the same.

“The other players have all of a sudden stepped up to the mark. Targett deserves this move, he worked so hard for them last season.

“£12million for a guy who came in and helped them win those games, in this day and age, in the Premier League, dirt cheap.”

Targett made 16 appearances for Newcastle during the 2021-22 season.

He failed to score or assist but bolstered a backline that kept seven clean sheets after the turn of the year.

In other news, Newcastle United have been told to re-sign Georginio Wijnaldum as transfer decision close.
