Newcastle United backed for new signing spree after ‘£100,000-a-week’ reveal – pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Newcastle United could spend even bigger next summer (2023) if they can get the likes of Isaac Hayden and Dwight Gayle off the wage bill.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Magpies are “building something special” at St James’ Park.
According to The Telegraph (28 September), Newcastle are still spending more than “£100,000 per week” on players no longer plying their trade at the club – an expense of more than £5.2million a year.

Hayden, Ciaran Clark, and Jeff Hendrick are all having a fraction of their big-money wages paid by the Championship clubs where they are on loan.
The report claims Newcastle are still paying the wages of Gayle and Federico Fernandez despite the duo leaving Tyneside on permanent deals.
The Magpies spent a reported £122.4million during the summer window – bringing in the likes of Alexander Isak and Sven Botman.
When asked if getting players like Hayden and Gayle off the wage bill will free up even more transfer funds at St James’ Park, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think it will.
“If you’re going to get rid of these players, it’s going to be next summer.
“They’ll gladly allow these players to leave, get something for them, and get them off the wage structure.
“If all these players have done well, then they’ll get that clean slate to leave.
“That’ll give Newcastle the opportunity to spend big again and bring in players who are wanted, needed, and have potential to grow in the long-term for the football club.

“They’re not planning for just one or two seasons, this is for four or five seasons. They’re building something special.
“Players like Gayle, Hayden, and Clark have served their purpose, and now it’s time for them to leave.”
