Newcastle United backed to complete ‘massive’ James Maddison signing after source’s update

Newcastle United could still sign James Maddison despite being told he is not for sale.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ transfer struggles.

On Thursday (4 August), Football Insider revealed Leicester have now told Newcastle that Maddison, 25, is not for sale.

Newcastle have seen bids of £40million and £50million rejected by the Foxes in this window.

The Magpies are yet to sign an attacker this summer after confirming the signings of Nick Pope, Matt Targett and Sven Botman.

However, Kenny claims the move could still happen and suspects Leicester’s message is simply an attempt to drive up Maddison’s asking price.

“It would be a big signing,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Leicester have said he is not for sale to bump up the price tag, that’s what happens when Newcastle are interested.

“I like Maddison, he had an amazing season last year. He has gone so well at Leicester and I’m sure he would be a great signing.

“I think they can get him before the window shuts, it would be another massive signing for them.”

Maddison scored 12 Premier League goals during 2021-22, more than any Newcastle player.

Newcastle won their first game of the 2022-23 season 2-0 against Nottingham Forest thanks to goals from Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson.

The Magpies are next in action against Brighton next Saturday (13 August).
