Newcastle United backed to sign Matt Targett replacement after journalist’s reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has backed Antonee Robinson to replace Matt Targett at Newcastle United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker insisted Robinson fits Newcastle’s style more than Targett.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur (6 December), the Magpies are preparing a £12.9million bid for the Fulham left-back.

Eddie Howe’s side have reportedly set their sights on the 25-year-old ahead of the January transfer window.

The defender impressed at the World Cup for the USA and helped them reach the round of 16.

The American’s contract at Craven Cottage expires in 2024.

When asked if the north-east giants are looking at Robinson as a replacement for Targett, Whelan told Football Insider:If they went out to get him he would probably be their first choice.

I think he fits the bill for what they are now. They are a very attacking unit. From what we have seen from the World Cup, he can do all parts of that game. From box to box defending, he has been excellent.

He has got the energy, the pace and that attacking presence when he gets forward as well.

I think Targett is not that attacking full-back that Newcastle want. He is very steady and consistent but I think Newcastle are looking at that prominence going forward.

I thought after his World Cup there would be a few people interested because he was excellent and has caught the eye of quite a few people.
