Newcastle United backed to sign ‘brilliant’ Bruno Guimaraes partner after Sky reveal – pundit

Paul Robinson has backed Newcastle United to submit a landmark bid for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said “it would be a real coup” if the Magpies could win the race for the 21-year-old’s signature.

Fernandez starred for Argentina at the World Cup, helping them win the final on Sunday (18 December).

The centre-midfielder was crowned the young player of the tournament for his performances.

A host of Premier League clubs have been credited with an interest in Fernandez, including the Magpies.

Speaking to Sky Sports (19 December), Eddie Howe insisted a player cannot be signed off the back of the World Cup.

Howe said he is aware of Fernandez but fears the transfer fee may be “quite lumpy.”

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the comments, Robinson said: “Everyone knows Newcastle have a lot of money to play with.

“When Newcastle come knocking, clubs will charge a premium.

“I agree with Howe about signing a player off the back of one tournament. But, Fernandez does not fall into that category. He has been brilliant over a period of time. He has been very good for Benfica by all accounts.

“He is a player they should absolutely be looking at. Imagine him alongside Bruno Guimaraes.

“Fernandez is a brilliant player at the right age. Whoever gets him will be getting one of the best young midfielders in the world. It would be a real coup for Newcastle if they can get him in.”
