Newcastle United news: Kieran Maguire names the ‘real winners’ as Uefa confirmation imminent

It would be a huge boost to local businesses if Newcastle United are to host matches at the 2028 European Championship.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the earning power of the Magpies’ Tyneside home.

The Daily Mail reported last Friday (4 March) that the UK and Ireland are set to run unopposed in their bid to host the 2028 Euros.

It is also understood that St James’ Park is among the venues likely to host matches in the tournament with Uefa’s confirmation imminent.

Newcastle chiefs Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi have outlined plans to expand and increase earning power at the 52,000-seaters stadium.

But Maguire claims that the surrounding community would be the main beneficiary from hosting Euros matches.

“Normally, Uefa sells the tickets,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“The English FA gets some sort of hosting fee and then shares that with the club.

“It isn’t hugely lucrative for individual clubs. It is much more beneficial for the supply team and ancillary services and businesses in the city.

“My experience as going to the Euros as a fan, the bars, hotels and taxi drivers do extremely well out of it.

“It won’t be moving the dial much from the club’s perspective. But it’s all about business and the surrounding areas, that’s who the real winners are.”

Newcastle are now nine games without defeat in the Premier League after their 2-1 win at Southampton last night (10 March).

Eddie Howe’s side are 14th in the league table.
