Kieran Maguire: Amanda Staveley rewriting Premier League rules amid private Newcastle United reveal

Amanda Staveley’s presence on the Premier League’s broadcast and access working gives Newcastle United the chance to shape league-wide policy.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest developments behind the scenes at Premier League HQ.

As relayed by the Daily Mail last Sunday (22 January), Magpies director Staveley has been chosen to head up the new broadcast and access panel.

The working group will deliberate on the Premier League’s digital and promotional rights as well as how much access broadcasters get to players and managers.

The group – which also lists representatives from Arsenal, Man United, Man City and Brighton, Leicester City – will soon meet for the first time before delivering an update at the next Premier League shareholders meeting in February.

Maguire explained how Newcastle can benefit from Staveley’s new position.

One way to get involved in policy is to network and get involved at the top table,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

This appears to be the strategy Amanda Stavely is taking in becoming the chair of the broadcast and access working group.

This will be ideal for Newcastle because there are two main issues when it comes to broadcast revenue, the size of the cake and how it is divided up.

Newcastle are now in a position to look at that through a different lens than they did under Mike Ashley.

The money coming into the club from PIF is contributing to having a larger budget.

One of the ways they have achieved that is through increased commercial revenues through the links with the Middle East. The other is a re-think of how money is distributed within the Premier League itself.
