Newcastle United could agree ‘huge’ naming rights deal after chief’s reveal – pundit

Paul Robinson has backed Newcastle United to sell the naming rights to St. James’ Park.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England number one said it is “vitally important” for the Magpies to increase their commercial revenue to comply with financial fair play.

As reported by the Guardian (12 October), Newcastle’s new chief executive, Darren Eales, revealed the club’s fans will be consulted prior to stadium naming rights being sold.

Eales claimed fan engagement is “front and centre” of the club’s plans moving forward.

Previous owner Mike Ashley sparked fury among fans when he renamed St. James’ Park the Sports Direct Arena in 2011.

When asked by Football Insider if fans would react similarly to the club’s current ownership selling naming rights, Robinson said:

“The owners have so much money.

“From a pure financial point of view they do not need to sell the naming rights to the stadium.

“However, they need to do it because of financial fair play. To have a naming rights deal for the stadium would strongly strengthen their position with financial fair play. It would balance the books and make everything alright on paper.

“If they can sell huge naming rights for the stadium they will be able to pay more in wages and transfer fees. Such partnerships are vitally important if Newcastle are to spend big and comply with financial fair play.

“It is pivotal they have a large commercial revenue stream moving forward.”
