Kieran Maguire: Newcastle United could now build Tottenham-style stadium – ‘best in the country’
Newcastle United have “one of the best stadiums in the country” and could boost capacity beyond 60,000 when the time comes for a revamp
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s plans to expand St James’ Park.
As relayed by the Shields Gazette on Friday (20 January) the Magpies are exploring long-term plans to improve their facilities.

A new training base and a small stadium for the under-23 side are on the cards as well as the redevelopment of their Tyneside home ground.
The plan is to build on the existing site rather than move to a new arena entirely, as had previously been suggested.
St James’ Park is the seventh-biggest stadium in the Premier League behind Old Trafford, the London Stadium, the Etihad, Anfield, the Emirates and the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Maguire believes that St James’ Park could soon rival the best venues in the country in terms of capacity.
“There is no doubt it is one of the best stadiums in the country in terms of atmosphere and location,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“I think they would be looking to match those clubs in London – Tottenham, Arsenal and West Ham – whose capacity is just over 60,000.

“I think if that is the case, expansion makes more sense in terms of return on investment than a total rebuild.
“Only if you were going above 75,00 would it be worth the money to knock it down and start again.”
