Newcastle United could rip up Jonjo Shelvey contract after new £3m reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Jonjo Shelvey will leave Newcastle United next summer even if he triggers an automatic one-year extension to his contract.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Magpies will be looking for a “different calibre of player” to the 30-year-old.

According to the Daily Mirror (31 October), Shelvey will see his contract extended until June 2024 if he turns out for Newcastle against Southampton on Sunday (6 November) – at a cost of £3million to the Tyneside club.

The report quotes manager Eddie Howe, who has insisted the England international has a “huge role” to play for his side this season.

Shelvey has managed just two substitute appearances for Newcastle this term after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury sustained on the eve of the new campaign.

The Magpies sit fourth in the Premier League after losing just one of their opening 13 games.

Whelan suggested Shelvey doesn’t have a future beyond the summer of 2023 even if his extension is finalised.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “They’re going for a different calibre of player now.

“As much as Jonjo Shelvey has done a great job for Newcastle – is it the time where you look further afield and bring in a better player if they’re going to go forward.

“If this is in his contract, then it will happen anyway. They need him in that midfield right now, so the extension will be triggered.

“But they’ll go out and bolster that midfield.

“I think he’ll end up triggering that contract, playing a part this season – but ultimately end up leaving the club next summer when Newcastle look to strengthen in midfield.”
