Finance guru: Premier League could change rules to block multiple Newcastle United deals
The Premier League could introduce new legislation to block multiple PIF-backed Newcastle United sponsorship deals.
That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ latest commercial deal with Noon.com.
The club announced on Monday (27 June) that they had partnered with the e-commerce platform, whose branding will appear on their sleeves from 2022-23.
The company is part-owned by Newcastle’s Saudi owners, the Public Investment Fund.
Regulations introduced earlier this year demanded that new sponsorship deals signed by Premier League clubs must be checked by an independent auditor for fair market value.
And Plumley forecasts that the top flight could expand the laws to knock back future Newcastle attempts to sign deals with companies associated with PIF.
“It all kind of points to more deals being done this way,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“You can see the model and the potential it has moving forward. You would expect to see more.
“The only sticking point is what the Premier League plan to do with fair valuation of sponsorship deals. We don’t know how that might be further passed into legislation.
“But barring something like that, we are likely to see more deals in the future.”

PIF have also given the green light to upgrade Newcastle’s Darsley Park training complex.
The Magpies are expected to move to a new facility altogether in the future, with the revamp assumed to be a stop-gap.
In other news, pundit claims six Newcastle United players stopping club from announcing next signing.
