Newcastle United could sign Chris Wood replacement for £30m after source’s transfer reveal – pundit
Noel Whelan has insisted Brentford striker Ivan Toney would be a notable upgrade on Chris Wood as Newcastle United plot a summer move.
The former Leeds forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, heralded the 26-year-old as a “relentless” goalscorer after his debut season in the Premier League.
A recruitment source told Football Insider on Wednesday (20 April) that Brentford will demand at least £30million for Toney amid interest from Newcastle and Brighton.

The striker is contracted to the Bees until 2025.
Whelan insisted Toney would be a significant step up for Newcastle on £25million addition Chris Wood.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Toney would be going to old ground at Newcastle. He has definitely proven that he can score in the Premier League, that’s for sure.
“He’s done a fantastic job at Brentford since he signed. It’s a fair price. He is not the same player he was at Newcastle. He has got more experience, he’s proven to be a relentless goalscorer in whatever league.
“So £30million, in my opinion, if you’re going to be buying a Chris Wood for £25million. Right now, Toney’s the more potent goalscorer between the two of them.
“If £5million more gets you Ivan Toney, no disrespect to Chris Wood but if you’re looking at age and goalscoring records, Ivan Toney is a no brainer.
“I think he fits right into the mould. So £30million is not unfair. It’s quite reasonable for someone of his age, ability and proven in the Premier League this year.
“I don’t think that’s Brentford holding them to ransom. It’s a fair valuation of the player.”

Toney has netted 12 goals in 29 Premier League appearances this season.
Meanwhile, Wood, 30, has scored twice in 14 appearances for Newcastle.
