Newcastle United expected to complete two more signings after confirmed news – pundit

Alan Hutton has claimed Newcastle United could make two more signings before the start of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa defender said that there are areas of the team the Magpies need to improve in.

On Friday (1 July), Newcastle United announced the signing of Sven Botman, 22, from Lille on a five-year deal.

The Netherlands international becomes Eddie Howe’s third singing of the summer following the permanent captures of Matt Targett and Nick Pope.

Botman helped Lille win the Ligue 1 title in the 2020-21 campaign.

When asked how many more signings Newcastle would need to make in this window, Hutton told Football Insider: “The fans will want loads probably.

I think there is some areas that they were heavily reliant on, especially when Callum Wilson was injured last season, they were heavily reliant on [Allan] Saint-Maximin to do something and make something happen.

“Defensively I thought they were better when [Matt] Targett came in, when [Kieran] Trippier came in. Centre-back I think was a problem which they’ve obviously sorted out.

The midfield I think they’ll look to strengthen.

Newcastle

It really depends on how they see their season and what the progression is for them. I think they’ll be much like [Aston] Villa, they’ll be aiming for that top ten, into European type positions. So to do that they need to strengthen in a lot of areas, defensively was the number one thing to build that platform moving forward.

But you’re probably looking at four or five signings, that’s probably the number most teams look at. If you can get a few out, four or five in, freshen up the squad that can really kick on and help them within the upcoming season.
