Newcastle United news: Medical expert issues ‘surprise’ Kieran Trippier claim amid new ‘clue’

Kieran Trippier is progressing better than expected and will likely return to action for Newcastle United towards the end of April.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Trippier, 31, has been sidelined with a broken metatarsal since the 1-0 win over Aston Villa on 13 February.

As quoted by Chronicle Live on 4 April, Eddie Howe claimed: “We will not be able to start pushing him maybe as quickly as we initially wanted to.”

But the Magpies boss told the same outlet last Friday (15 April) the right-back is in fact “ahead of schedule” and has returned to individual training.

The England man’s “surprise” change in fortunes is a “clue” that he could play again before the end of the month, claims Dinnery.

“With a bone injury, the risk factors are less than with a muscle injury,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“The fact he is working on grass is great and gives us a clue that things are moving in the right direction.

“Newcastle aren’t mathematically safe but are more or less there. So, Eddie Howe can afford to err on the side of caution.

“There has been some surprise that he is ahead of schedule, but I would certainly have expected him to return to play before the end of the season.

“I think we can now realistically expect to see him towards the end of April or the beginning of May.”

Trippier scored in each of his last two matches before his foot injury and has played five times since he signed from Atletico Madrid in January.

Newcastle face Norwich City and Liverpool in their last two matches in April.
