Newcastle United have ‘secret strength’ that ‘people aren’t talking about’ – pundit
Newcastle United’s strength is in the improved form of players who started the season at the club.
That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid the club’s improved form.
Newcastle are unbeaten in nine Premier League games ahead of Sunday’s (13 March) game against Chelsea.
January signings Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes scored the goals as the Magpies beat Southampton 2-1 on Thursday (10 March).
However, McAvennie insists it is the improvement of other players who are to credit for the club’s form.
“I mean, look at Shelvey. He was nowhere near under Bruce,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“He’s playing better now than he probably ever has for Newcastle.
“You look at the players alongside him. Willock, Joelinton, they were doing nothing at the start of the season.
“They looked really bad, not just poor. Now they are playing so, so well.
“That’s Newcastle’s secret strength. A lot of people are talking about the money and I’m not sure that’s right, people aren’t talking about these players.
“Yes, money was spent. Yes, Newcastle are better for it, I get that. But look at the players who were rubbish at the start of the season and look where they are now.
“It’s a very good turnaround and all of a sudden they have quality all over the pitch.”

Newcastle also made three additions to their defence in January.
Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Kieran Trippier all joined the club.
