Newcastle United in ‘terrible position’ after shattering development – pundit

Newcastle United’s upcoming run of fixtures puts them in a “terrible position” following their loss to Liverpool on Monday (1 January).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton admitted he did not expect the Magpies to come out on top in the 4-2 loss at Anfield, but consecutive losses pose an issue.

Eddie Howe’s side have lost seven of their last eight games in all competitions including unexpected defeats to Luton Town and Everton in the Premier League.

They next face Sunderland, Man City and Aston Villa which could see this dismal run of form, which has seen them slip to ninth in the league table, continue.

Hutton urged the club to “transform” their play style to get back to winning ways by any means necessary off the back of their loss to the Reds.

“It was one of those games where Liverpool just played at a higher level,” he told Football Insider.

“You would expect them to because they’re chasing the league title.

“It was always going to be difficult for Newcastle, but they managed to score two goals.

“But they were never going to really trouble Liverpool despite having so many efforts at goal.

“The most worrying thing for me is that it was their third defeat in a row and four if you include the cup game against Chelsea.

“It’s a terrible position to be in for them and if you look at their upcoming fixtures, it’s a real problem.

“They’re going to have to transform the way they’re playing at this moment in time to pick up results any way they can.”
