Newcastle United issued ‘never dreamt of’ claim by pundit after another signing sealed

Frank McAvennie has tipped Newcastle United to win a trophy before Arsenal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker suggested the Magpies will qualify for Europe in the next two years.

On Friday (1 July), Newcastle announced the signing of Sven Botman on a five-year contract.

The defender joined Eddie Howe’s side from Lille in a deal worth £35million.

The Dutchman becomes Howe’s third signing of the summer following the arrival of Matt Targett, after a successful loan spell, and Nick Pope from Burnley last month.

When if the signings made could help the Magpies challenge for European qualification next season, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I think Newcastle will win a trophy before Arsenal.

I think it’s going to take another three years to fight for a trophy. To fight for Champions League it will take about four years.

But they’re going to be on the hunt for Europa League and the top six, or the [Europa] Conference League and top seven. Nobody at Newcastle would’ve dreamt they would get Europe in the next couple of years but they will.

“I think they’ll win something before Arsenal.”
