Newcastle United join Aston Villa in push for £135m deal – Kieran Maguire
Newcastle United will join Aston Villa in their push to increase the PSR allowable loss limit to £135million next season.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that increasing the PSR limit would allow both Newcastle and Villa to “accelerate” their spending and close the gap to the “big six”.
Villa have proposed an increase to the PSR allowable losses from £105million to £135million next season in what will be the final year of the current regulations.
It would allow top-flight clubs to lose a maximum of £135million over a three-year rolling period, with any excessive losses resulting in a points deduction.
As revealed by Football Insider, multiple Premier League clubs have shown support for Villa’s proposal – which is set to be further discussed at the summer Premier League AGM.
Newcastle United and Aston Villa unite for £135m deal
Maguire believes Newcastle will be at the forefront of clubs supporting the change as it would allow them to increase their spending on infrastructure and player signings.
“The £105 million PSR loss limit was introduced over a decade ago,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“It has not changed with inflation.

“So therefore, you can understand why perhaps some clubs, especially aspirational clubs such as Villa and Newcastle, would welcome an increase in the allowable losses because this would allow them to accelerate spending.
“This would allow them to invest in their infrastructure and squad to narrow the gap to the big six who were well-placed when the rules were introduced.“
