Newcastle United news: 35-year-old looking for ‘escape route’ as Bruno Guimaraes controversy analysed – pundit
Paul Robinson feels sorry for Kasper Schmeichel after Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes scored a controversial goal against the Leicester City goalkeeper on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England number one said Schmeichel, 35, was looking for “an escape route” after the “freak incident.”
Guimaraes had the ball in the back of the net on the hour mark at St. James’ Park but referee Jarred Gillett disallowed the goal.
As shown on Sky Sports (17 April), VAR overturned the decision after adjudging the Newcastle midfielder not to have fouled Leicester City goalkeeper Schmeichel.
The decision would prove pivotal with the Magpies going on to win the game 2-1.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the goal, Robinson said: “It was a strange one and an unlucky one.
“From a goalkeeper’s point of view, I can see how it happened. It has come through his hands and got stuck between his legs. It is unfortunate that he hasn’t been able to regain the ball. It was just one of those.
“As a goalkeeper in that position you are looking for every opportunity to disallow the goal. You want an escape route but with VAR you can see everything clearly.

“It was a freak incident and you could say a mistake. Kasper was just unlucky though for me.
“He is a goalkeeper I really like. I rate him both on and off the field. He is a top human being and a top goalkeeper. He will not want to see it again but it was by no means a howler.”
