Newcastle United news: Callum Wilson in ‘danger’ after new development – ‘it’s the worst’, says pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is in “very good hands” after he suffered a new injury while away with England at the World Cup.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 30-year-old may be on a different training and recovery schedule to the other Three Lions stars because of his history of injury problems.

As per The Sun (7 December), Wilson and star midfielder Declan Rice missed out on training through injury and illness respectively – just days out from Saturday’s (10 December) World Cup quarter-final clash with France.

Both players have since returned to training at the Three Lions’ Al-Wakrah base.

Six-cap star Wilson has had a history of injury problems since joining Newcastle in 2020 and has already missed six games so far this season.

Nevertheless, his six goals so far this term have helped Newcastle into a third-place Premier League berth after 15 games.

Whelan claimed a long-term injury to Wilson will be the “worst fear” for Magpies boss Eddie Howe.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “There’s always danger with a player like Wilson.

“But he is in very good hands. They’re probably just looking after him, giving him the rest time he needs – especially with the heat out there in Qatar.

“It’s going to be the worst fear for Eddie Howe – his main striker coming back from this World Cup out of shape.

“But I think Southgate and his staff will do the right thing. They know he might need that bit more cotton wool around him than the other players.

“Hopefully he can be fit for the France game and come off the bench – because he could be needed.”
