Newcastle United news: Ex-Fifa official demands ‘wholesale change’ to VAR as controversy analysed
Keith Hackett has called for “wholesale change” to VAR after controversy in Newcastle United’s loss at Chelsea.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League official suggested the operation of VAR move away from Stockley Park to help officials review their decisions post-match.
Referee David Coote and VAR official John Brooks have come under intense scrutiny for their performance in Newcastle’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea on Sunday.
The duo controversially decided against awarding Magpies winger Jacob Murphy a penalty and against sending off Chelsea forward Kai Havertz.
The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has since claimed (16 March) that the north-east club have spoken with PGMOL boss Mike Riley about the decisions.
Hackett supported the club’s decision to seek answers on the decision from the PGMOL.
“Newcastle had every right to ask what was going on,” he told Football Insider.
“Ultimately, there needs to be wholesale change to the VAR system.
“I think they should close Stockley Park completely. I believe the VAR operation should be at the ground of the game. That way at the end of the game the VAR official can come into the referees dressing room and review the decisions and have a conversation.
“Then, when the manager comes in after the game, which they are allowed to, there is some level of understanding.”

Speaking on VAR, Eddie Howe said: “For some reason, I think the use has been diluted.
“I don’t see it effectively intervening as much as it did in the early stages in a positive way.”
