Newcastle United news: Expert issues ‘honest’ verdict on Yann Sommer pursuit

Paul Robinson has doubts over Newcastle United signing Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England shot-stopper questioned whether the 33-year-old was an upgrade on current number one Martin Dubravka.

According to talkSPORT‘s Alex Crook (10 June), the Magpies want to sign a ball-playing goalkeeper this summer.

Eddie Howe’s side are said to be interested in Switzerland number one Yann Sommer, who has just 12 months remaining on his contract in Germany.

Man United’s Dean Henderson has held talks over a potential move to St. James’ Park but a move at this stage appears unlikely.

When asked by Football Insider if Sommer would be a welcome addition to Howe’s side for next season, Robinson said: “Yan Sommer is a very experienced goalkeeper.

“Would he be signed as a number one or as competition for Dubravka?

“Sommer has had a good career. He has performed exceptionally well at international level as well. I question whether he comes in as a number one though.

“To be honest, I would keep Dubravka as number one if I was Eddie Howe. Sommer would be a good competition or a backup for next season though.”

Sommer made 36 appearances across all competitions for Borussia Monchengladbach in the 2021-22 campaign.

He has been capped by Switzerland 74 times and played in their 1-0 defeat to Germany last Thursday.
