Newcastle United news: Josh Dasilva begging for extended ban as controversial footage analysed – Ex-Fifa official

Brentford’s Josh Dasilva looked like he wanted to get sent off in his side’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle United on Saturday (26 February), according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee was stunned by Dasilva’s challenge on Matt Targett in the opening exchanges.

As shown on the BBC’s Match of the Day programme, in the 11th minute Dasilva and Targett came together just outside the Brentford penalty area.

Mike Dean actually awarded Brentford a free-kick before reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor and reserving his decision before sending Dasilva off.

The midfielder, 23, will now miss his side’s next three Premier League games – crucial clashes with Norwich City and Burnley plus a trip to Leicester City.

“He cannot argue with that red card,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I can’t understand that players at the professional level have a lack of understanding on what you can and cannot do.

“If we go out and drive our car we know what we can and cannot do. Occasionally we may go over 30 miles per hour but we know we are at risk of being punished.

“I think this was a player almost wanting to get sent off. This was a good use of VAR, no question.”

Thomas Frank told club media after the game that the incident was a “random situation” that decided the game.

Newcastle’s victory lifts them to 14th in the Premier League table, above Brentford, and four points clear of the relegation zone.
