Newcastle United news: Pundit issues ‘amazing’ Dan Burn claim after ‘big’ update
Dan Burn could be in line for an England call-up after his “amazing” start to life at Newcastle, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, conceded there are “five or six” other players competing with the 29-year-old for a Three Lions place.
Speaking on talkSPORT (7 March), former Newcastle midfielder Darren Ambrose claimed Burn is “in with a shout” for an England call ahead of this month’s friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.
Yesterday’s (13 March) defeat against Chelsea was the first time Burn has tasted defeat since joining the Magpies on transfer deadline day in January.
However, Whelan claimed Connor Coady, Trevoh Chalobah, and Fikayo Tomori could be ahead of the former Brighton man in the pecking order.
“It’s flattering, and he’ll probably say the same thing,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“Could he get the opportunity? Possibly. But so could five or six other players in the Premier League.
“There are other players who have been at a high level throughout the season.
“He’s done amazingly since coming into Newcastle, don’t get me wrong. You can see the instant transformation just with his arrival.
“It wouldn’t surprise me to see him in the squad, but the likes of Coady, Chalobah, and Tomori are all ahead of him in the pecking order for me at the moment.
“Let’s take a step back. He’s done well, but there are other centre-backs who have been very consistent week-to-week across this whole season.”

Newcastle paid Brighton a reported £13million for Burn’s services in the winter window.
The Magpies sit 14th in the Premier League after losing just one of their last nine matches.
