Newcastle United news: Pundit issues ‘amazing’ St James’ Park prediction after ‘wonderful’ news

Newcastle United’s St James’ Park will become “the place to be” in English football over the next few years.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after an update on the stadium’s future.

In an interview with The Athletic (26 February) Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi revealed the club will be staying at St James’ Park.

He explained ” It would be like tearing your soul out” to build a new stadium.

It was also revealed the club will look to expand St James’ beyond its current 52,405 capacity.

McAvennie was delighted to hear St James’ Park will remain as Newcastle’s home.

“I used to live up there, St James’ is right in the middle of the city centre,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s the heart of the city. That’s what Newcastle is all about. It would be diabolical if they tried to move it.

“Everything in Newcastle is surrounded by football it’s incredible. It would be wrong for St James’ to be outside the city centre.

“It’s a great stadium and it’s been rocking since the takeover went through.

“Getting even more fans in would be wonderful as well. I’m not sure where they would go but that’s not my problem to sort out.

“It’s a special stadium, I’m glad it’s staying. It’s going to be the place to be in English football over the next few years.

“The stadium just needs a bit of care because it hasn’t been looked after and it will be amazing with even more people in.”
