Newcastle United news: Pundit issues Joelinton claim after masterstroke – ‘wow’

Joelinton can go from “strength to strength” with his newfound confidence after returning to his natural forward role for Newcastle, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old has been “one of the most improved players” since Eddie Howe’s arrival in November.

Joelinton grabbed a brace in his first game back upfront since mid-December, helping Newcastle to a 3-0 win over Norwich on Saturday (23 April).

The former Hoffenheim star had been utilised in a central midfield role alongside countryman Bruno Guimaraes.

As per Squawka (22 April), only two players have recorded 30 tackles, interceptions, clearances, take-ons, and aerial duels this term – Joelinton and Declan Rice.

Whelan suggested the hitman’s confidence will be sky-high after a successful spell in midfield.

“For me, he’s one of the most improved players since Eddie Howe came in,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“I think he was one of their best midfield players when he was playing in that role. He’s got energy, pace, can bring others into play – and I think it suited him more than a forward role.

“He looked like a completely different player.

“I think that spell will have definitely given him confidence. The manager has to take credit for that after taking the gamble of putting him in that midfield.

“He’s shown that confidence with those well-taken two goals at the weekend.

“He’s getting himself into the right areas and wow – he looks to have more belief now than he ever has at Newcastle. He can go from strength to strength now.”

Saturday’s game was Joelinton’s 100th for Newcastle in the Premier League.

He is under contract until June 2025.
