Newcastle United news: Pundit issues ‘massive’ Callum Wilson claim after source reveal

Callum Wilson’s Newcastle return could be the catalyst for a top-half finish, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the sidelined 30-year-old is “as dangerous as anyone in the Premier League” when “on his day”.

This site revealed on Tuesday (15 March) that Wilson is confident of returning from his calf injury before the final five games of the season.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the striker has targeted a possible return to first-team action for the Norwich City clash on 23 April.

Wilson has been sidelined since injuring his calf in the first half of the Magpies’ draw against Man United in December 2021.

Campbell insisted the former Bournemouth star’s return will be a “massive boost” for Eddie Howe’s side.

“Newcastle will be looking to finish as high as possible,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“You never quite know what can be possible, to get Wilson back will be a massive boost.

“He’s worked with Eddie Howe before – he really knows how to get the best out of him.

“The only problem with Wilson has been his availability and his ability to stay fit. Maybe he’s come back too soon at times, but now he can afford to take his time with the pressure off a bit.

“Fingers crossed we’ve seen the back of those injury problems. On his day he’s as dangerous as anyone in the Premier League.

“They’ll keep pushing, and him coming back could just lift them into that top half – it’s possible.”

Wilson has netted six goals in 15 Premier League appearances this term.

Newcastle now sit just three points adrift of 10th-place Southampton after pulling clear of relegation trouble.
