Newcastle United news: Pundit shares ‘crazy’ Eddie Howe verdict amid new speculation

Eddie Howe is doing a good job at Newcastle but he should not win the Premier League Manager of the Year award.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 44-year-old’s impact at St James’ Park.

Newcastle found themselves in 11th after beating Crystal Palace on Wednesday (20 April), the highest spot they have occupied this season.

The win also put Howe’s side on 40 points, the total that is often mooted as enough to keep a club in the Premier League.

Howe has won 35 of those points after finding the Magpies bottom of the league when he joined in November.

Despite this achievement, McAvennie insists Howe won’t be considered for the manager of the season award.

“He’s done a really good job but he’s not the manager of the season,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Does he deserve a mention? Probably. He has done a really good job and if he gets them into the top half then that’s a magnificent achievement.

“They had five points when he came in, they had 40 after beating Crystal Palace.

“That’s crazy considering he came in halfway through November. I think he has a really bright future.

“You know he will be backed, Newcastle are going to back him. It’s up to Eddie to keep producing.

“There is no reason he can’t be really successful there because he has improved them tenfold.

“Manager of the season though? Not for me.”
