Newcastle United news: Pundit shares ‘season-ending’ verdict after Manquillo blow reported today
Newcastle United will continue their impressive form despite an injury to key man Kieran Trippier.
That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the defender was hit by a “huge blow”.
Trippier scored as Newcastle beat Aston Villa 1-0 on Sunday (13 February) but was later substituted after picking up a knock.
The Magpies revealed on Monday (14 February) that the right-back has fractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot following an X-ray post-game.
To make matters worse for the Toon, Newcastle World have today (15 February) claimed Javier Manquillo will miss the next two weeks after he also picked up an injury against Villa.
Despite this blow, McAvennie insists17th-placed8 Newcastle will beat the drop.
“I think Newcastle will be ok without Trippier,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Look, it’s a huge blow for them. We all know how good he’s been since he came in.
“But they signed four other players in January, the lad Bruno Guimaraes has barely had a look in.
“I know he’s not a defender but that shows Newcastle are strong in other areas.
“They have a big new centre-back in Dan Burn who looks solid and they have kept some clean sheets recently.
“There is attacking talent there too, Chris Wood, Allan Saint-Maximin, these are quality players.
“I don’t think it will be pretty but I’m sure Newcastle have enough to stay up even it’s a season-ending injury.”

United are on a three-game winning streak with Tripper scoring in their last two victories.
This run has lifted Newcastle out of the relegation zone ahead of back to back away games against West Ham and Brentford.
