Newcastle United news: Pundit tips winner in Mykhaylo Mudryk race after source’s reveal today
Frank McAvennie would “love to see” Mykhaylo Mudryk in the Premier League playing for Newcastle United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Newcastle could have the edge over Arsenal for his signature.
Football Insider revealed on 20 December that the Magpies have made a move for the 21-year-old and are preparing to go toe to toe with Arsenal for his signature.
The Ukranian has been a long-term target for Mikel Arteta’s side and has publicly shared his interest in joining them next year.
The latest from a Newcastle source today is that the club have made contact with Shakhtar Donetsk to register their interest in a potential deal.
Owners PiF have given Eddie Howe the green light to bring in one box-office signing in the new year and Mudryk is high up their list.
The Ukraine international has just over three years remaining on his contract at Shakhtar.
McAvennie said Newcastle could be a better destination than London for the forward.
“I can see Arteta wanting someone like Mudryk in there but they are a young team,” he told Football Insider.
“Newcastle are going forwards. Somebody like Mudryk would be a great name for the north-east, they would absolutely love it.
“I can see it happening – Mudryk is Eddie Howe’s kind of player. He would not be going there just for the money. I can understand any manager wanting to bring him in. I would love to see him in the Premier League.“
