Newcastle United news: Robinson demands law be rewritten as Miguel Almiron footage analysed

Paul Robinson has called for the handball rule to be changed after Ashley Young conceded a penalty at Newcastle United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one suggested handball should only be given “if there is intent.”

Eddie Howe’s side thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 at St. James’ Park on Saturday (29 October).

As shown on Sky Sports (29 October), Callum Wilson scored Newcastle’s opener from the penalty spot after Ashley Young blocked Miguel Almiron’s shot with his arm.

Referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot and VAR official Tony Harrington chose not to intervene.

When asked by Football Insider if the officials came to the right decision in stoppage time of the first half, Robinson said: “The handball rule is the worst rule in football at the moment.

“Nobody knows what is going on.

“In the modern day, that is handball from Ashley Young. His arms were up in the air as he was trying to make the rest of his body shape big.

“The thing is, 15 years ago that would not have been handball. It would have been ball to hand.

“Handball should only be awarded if there was intent from the player. The sooner we go back to that interpretation of the rule the better. That would clear it up.

“Did Young mean to handball it? No. There is too much of a grey area around handball. It is ridiculous.”
