Newcastle United news: Scots pundit makes ‘huge’ Elliot Anderson claim

Newcastle United star Elliot Anderson will be hugely disappointed to miss out on his call up for the Scotland national team.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie is hopeful Anderson does not plan to change his international allegiance from Scotland to England.

The 20-year-old was called up to the national team for the first time for their Euro 2024 qualifier against Cyprus on Friday (8 September) and the friendly against England at Hampden next week.

Anderson, who was born in Whitley Bay but has a Scottish grandmother, opted to switch to Scotland after positive discussions with manager Steve Clarke.

The midfielder withdrew from the squad earlier this week after picking up an injury in training.

As quoted by Sky Sports (8 September), Clarke admitted that he did not ask Anderson for assurances over his future with the national team before he left the squad.

When asked how big a disappointment it will be for Anderson, McAvennie told Football Insider:It is going to be a huge disappointment.

He decided to play for Scotland, I do not know if somebody has maybe told him he will be able to get a game with England.

I would hate to think he has chosen Scotland and then would pull out because of a phone call. I would hate that to have happened but it does happen.

He will be a good addition to the Scotland squad if and when he gets back in.
